What Are Armored Fiber Optic Cables?

Armored fiber optic cable is a type of cable designed for harsh environments. It features a protective layer, usually made of steel or aluminum, that shields the delicate fiber strands from physical damage, moisture, and rodents. This makes it suitable for outdoor applications or installations in industrial settings where it may be exposed to potential hazards. The added armor enhances durability while maintaining the cable’s ability to transmit data over long distances effectively.

Ultimate FAQ Guide to Armored Fiber Optic Cable

Armored fiber optic cable adds an extra protective armor layer between cable core and outer jacket, to defend optical fibers against crushing, impact, rodent biting, abrasion and external mechanical damage. Common armor types include corrugated steel tape, steel wire, aluminum tape and non-metallic armor. It is widely deployed in outdoor ducts, direct burial, industrial sites and other harsh environments.

  • Single-mode (G.652D, G.657A1/A2): Long-distance transmission, ≥2km; telecom backbone, MAN, long-distance interconnection.
  • Multi-mode (OM1/OM2/OM3/OM4): Short distance within 2km; campus, data center short links.
G.657 bend-insensitive fiber is recommended if complex routing with frequent bends is required.
  • Calculate current used cores + reserve spare fibers (normally 20%~100% spare). For backbone projects, it is common to select 12/24/48/96/144 cores to avoid repeated construction.

General industry standard:
  • Dynamic bend radius (during pulling): ≥ 20 × cable outer diameter
  • Static bend radius (permanently installed): ≥ 10 × cable outer diameter

    Do not bend below the limit; it will cause hidden fiber attenuation and permanent damage.

Yes. Conductive steel/aluminum armor shall be grounded at both cable ends. Grounding prevents induced voltage, lightning hazards and corrosion of the armor layer. Non-metallic armored cables do not require grounding.

GYTA53 double-sheathed steel tape armored and SWA steel wire armored cables support direct burial.

Construction suggestion: Trench depth ≥1.2m, lay fine sand cushion under and above cable, install warning markers. Ordinary single-sheath GYTA/GYTS is better for duct laying.

Permitted only with indoor-rated jacket (LSZH / OFNR / OFNP). Outdoor PE-jacketed armored cables cannot be used inside buildings due to fire safety regulations.

  • Do not exceed maximum allowable pulling tension;
  • Avoid sharp twists and sharp-angle bending;
  • Do not drag cable directly on rough ground;
  • Do not use angle grinder / hacksaw to strip armor (vibration creates invisible fiber microcracks);
  • Control pulling speed ≤10 m/min.
